Assessment 2: Case Study Research Report (25%)
Word Count: 1,500-1,700 words (+/- 10%) (NOT including end APA 7 Reference list) Il 5G 83 Wingening Corporation Your primary objective is to view this assessment from the perspective of mental health issues and critically identify and examine their intersection with the various complex needs of these vulnerable clients.
CASE STUDY: You are a Mental Health Support worker for Wungening Aboriginal Corporation in their Wungening Moort program, a culturally secure, responsive and practical service, that aims to assist Aboriginal families to keep their children safely at home with loving family, community and culture. You have been allocated a family that consists of a mother (Cathy), daughter (Samantha), and son (Ernie) who are currently homeless. You have secured stable accommodation for your clients through the organization's Wooree Miya Women's refuge, and you now must assist and support them to access services to address their mental health and inter-related complex needs. The mother, Cathy (30yrs old) is a survivor of domestic violence experienced from her partner for the last five years and recovering from alcohol addiction. She states her partner has been imprisoned and she has had no contact with him, but is reluctant to discuss this due to stigma and shame. Cathy presents as highly anxious, tells you she has trouble sleeping and has recurring nightmares due to the violence she was subjected to; she admits to feeling deep guilt for having exposed her children to this environment. She has also felt very disconnected ever since leaving her home on country and moving to the city. She was told by one of the other case workers she may be suffering from Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Samantha (13yrs old) has been diagnosed with depression and has frequent panic attacks, is withdrawn and does not seem to be coping well; there are also scars on her arms that appear to be cuts, which she does not want to talk about when asked. Ernie (9yrs old) keeps wanting to play alone, has frequent outbursts and gets distressed especially around loud noises or when changing environments, and finds it difficult to communicate with other children or adults, often behaving inappropriately and aggressively. Cathy said she thinks her son may have autism. All three family members look tired and undernourished. This research assignment has three parts: Part 1 – Read the case study and conduct research to discuss the following: • How does Colonisation impact Indigenous Australians (including the Stolen Generation)? • Why is it important to understand Indigenous Australian culture when working with consumers? • What are the risk and protective factors for Aboriginal mental health? Part 2 – Evidence-based supports and interventions • Apply critical thinking and judgement in identifying appropriate help and supports suitable for all of Cathy, Samantha and Ernie's complex needs. • Name the supports and interventions that you will use and explain your choices using suitable research evidence. Part 3-Critical reflection It has now been one month since you first met your clients. • Critically reflect and evaluate the decisions that you have made including the therapies, interventions and organisation/s (if any) you chose to support your clients' needs using suitable research (as well as mental health policy and other) evidence.
